Postdocs - We welcome interest from potential postdocs. However, at this time, we can only consider applicants who have already secured external funding.
PhD Students - Apply to the University of California at Los Angeles, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Program. We strongly encourage applicants to pursue external scholarships and fellowships to support their graduate education; a list of funding opportunities is provided below. Due to the high volume of inquiries, Dr. Yoshida is unable to respond to prospective PhD student emails. If you are interested in joining the MOHALA Lab, we encourage you to complete our lab interest form in addition to the main MAE graduate application. For Fall 2027, we anticipate having up to one PhD position available, although this is subject to funding and departmental admissions. To be considered for a position, you must apply to the UCLA Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Program. We do not conduct pre-reviews, pre-screenings, or informal evaluations of prospective applicants.
High Schoolers, Undergraduates, & Master's Students - We are always looking for hard-working, innovative students to regularly work in our lab. We welcome students at UCLA and around the globe. Fill out our form below! If you are a high schooler or undergraduate not at UCLA, we may have remote projects available.
Due to a high volume of inquiries, we are unable to respond to individual emails. Placement in the lab depends on space, funding, capacity, and project needs. While we are grateful for your interest and excitement, we are unable to accommodate everyone. Prospective students can stay connected with our work by signing up for our email list and following us on social media. We encourage you to resubmit this form in future quarters if you have updates to your experiences or research interests.
If you are interested in working in the lab, please fill out our Lab Interest Form.
Priority Deadlines - To ensure that your application is reviewed, please submit this form by the appropriate deadline for the quarter you wish to join the lab (or earlier, especially for prospective graduate students and postdocs). If you are not contacted during one application cycle, we encourage you to submit a new interest form in future quarters, as available projects and openings change over time. We will do our best to inform you of any match with our group by the end of week 1 of the quarter.
Fall 2026: September 1, 2026
Winter 2027: December 1, 2026
Spring 2027: March 1, 2027
Summer 2027: May 1, 2027
Note: We do not pay undergraduates. If you need funding, please seek opportunities via UCLA URC-Sciences, UCLA BRI, and UCLA SPUR, which have deadlines as early as January.
Prospective M.S./Ph.D. Students - Students who are not currently enrolled at UCLA and plan to apply for Fall 2027 M.S. or Ph.D. admission are encouraged to submit this interest form by December 1, 2026 (coinciding with the graduate admissions deadline). This form does not replace the official UCLA graduate application but helps identify potential research matches prior to the admissions process.
We highly encourage all students to seek fellowships, scholarships, and other summer programs to participate in research with the lab. If you are an undergraduate, please apply to the NSF GRFP in the fall of your senior year, and please reach out to our lab to share your interests. If you are an Indigenous student, please reach out directly to Dr. Yoshida, as there are additional mentorship & scholarship programs available.
